For my FKT attempt, I will be raising money for Compañeros. This local non-profit organization helps immigrants on their path to becoming self-sufficient and active members of society. Compañeros works to make the community a more inclusive and welcoming place for people of all different backgrounds. Their programs include Bilingual assistance, Education outreach and Community Organization. (Learn More Here)
Supporting immigration is especially important to me because I came to the US from Russia when I was three. I was lucky enough to be adopted into a loving, flourishing family already living in the US. While I am infinitely grateful for the opportunities this has provided me, I am aware of friends and parents living in Durango who struggle with moving to the US, especially in the past 15 years. Policies around immigration are constantly changing, and the process of becoming a US citizen or even a resident is very complicated and time-intensive. Many immigrants from foreign countries face language barriers, challenges finding work, and often racism.
By hiking the Colorado trail, I am hopeful that I will be able to raise money and awareness of the struggles that many locals and peers deal with daily. My hike will be completely self-supported, which I think I take for granted as someone living in the US under the roof and paychecks of my parents. Thank you so much for the support, and I’m excited to see what we can do as a community!
